Remington Factory +2 (18") Mag Tube Ext Kit (Parkerized)

Post by wtfoxtrot »

Seen a few online in the blued finish, as well as a few +3...but looking specifically for parkerized +2 to better match the finish on my Express and fit flush with an 18.5" barrel. Thanks.

You can order factory extension kits and parts with Parkerized or Express black oxide finishes from Remington's parts department. More information here.

Check ebay as well. I got mine from there but mine is blued. Also be aware there are a few different finishes. The shiny blued finish, a matte blued finish, and the parkerizing. I believe the matte blued finish matches the express and the parkerizing is a little more grey in color.

Thanks for the tip. I guess part of the problem is deciphering the way in which the finishes are labeled across different sites/retailers. So if I just picked up a new 870 Express two months ago, you're saying the finish is most likely what is referred to as "matte blued" (vs. parkerized)? Is the black oxidized finish the same thing?

There are three main flavors of 870 finishes.

Wingmaster bluing is a black iron oxide conversion coating that is built up and polished to form a smooth, reflective surface that usually comes across as dark blue in color, or a black that may have a slight warm or cool hint. This is traditional gun bluing, and usually what folks are referring to when they use the term "blued".

Express bluing is also a black iron oxide conversion coating, but it has a matte texture, it's not polished. This finish is sometimes called matte bluing, but "oxide" is a more popular label. Matte oxide, black oxide, bead-blasted oxide, basically any dark, matte finish on a steel part that has "oxide" in the name.

Parkerizing is a conversion coating of metal (often zinc or manganese) phosphate, not oxide. It's an effective, utilitarian finish that is used on police and military 870s. Parkerizing has a matte texture that ranges from light gray to very dark gray or black, depending on the specific compounds and processes used to prep, create, and finish the phosphate layer. The appearance of dark gray or black Parkerizing is similar to the Express matte oxide finish, but the color and texture will be slightly different.

If you want the best cosmetic match for your Express, look for parts with matte black oxide finishes. If your options are limited or you want improved protection, Parkerizing is usually pretty close, especially at a glance or from a distance. Polished bluing will clearly stick out next to matte finishes, but that won't affect compatibility at all.
