Hey guys. First time poster, long time shooter.
I just bought my 870 (18.5" barrel) the other day and have a Wilson-Combat +2 magazine extension in the mail as we speak. I have been researching the idea of a clamp and if I need one or not. As with many forum topics, people either hate it or love it. The Nordic clamps have been getting a lot of support from those who do actually use clamps and if I decide to purchase a clamp, the Nordic will probably be it.
From the more experienced users on this forum:
1. Is a clamp necessary for my situation?
2. Is it true that clamps can start to walk up the barrel due to recoil? Is this preventable with the Nordic?
3. Is it true clamps can throw off point of impact? If so, that won't matter to me a lot since I will mostly be using this gun for home defense. I am not worried about long-range slug situations.
4. Will the Nordic be the best bet for my set-up? Which model should I be looking at?
Thanks a lot!
Is a clamp really necessary for me?
Re: Is a clamp really necessary for me?
Welcome to the forum.
1. IMO, a defense gun is not going to get the same treatment my benchrest rifle or trap shooting shotgun gets. It's a tool that will not be babied if called into action, and I want it to go to hades and back and still function properly. Being stronger is not a liability. For all the more a clamp costs, why not take the stress off of the magazine nut?
2. I have not experienced any clamp walking. I have not put a lot of rounds through mine and they have been field loads. So YMMV.
3. I have not checked as I am using a pistol grip setup and I don't need slugs. If I have to shoot at distance, I have many rifles. Having said that, I would expect the POI to move due to the clamp. I don't think it will vary that much from shot to shot, so I do feel you can "sight in" or zero the POI to the POA.
4. That is up to you. I went with a Advanced Technology +3 on mine. It's all metal, comes with the correct length spring, and does what it advertised.

Sorry, the last question was still in regards to the clamp. Unless you were telling that your +3 came with a clamp.Hntbambi wrote:

Does anyone have the Nordic on their 870? Even more, does anyone have the Nordic WITH a Wilson-Combat +2? Just looking for some opinions.
I've heard it ruins the finish of the gun (not TOO worried about that) so I've been devising a solution. I was trying to think of a sticky-backed material to put on the clamp rings that has a soft front side (like a cloth) so it would not hard the shotgun finish. Just an idea...
EDIT: Does anyone know if the Nordic or Clark clamps will even fit my setup?
Re: Is a clamp really necessary for me?
The Nordic will not fit the Wilson tube correctly.
From Nordics web site. " NC Shotgun Tube Clamp connects the magazine tube and barrel. Fits most shotguns when used with a Nordic Components Extension. Includes a tactical mini-rail. This is made to fit shotguns using a Nordic Components magazine tube extension. Our tube has an OD of 1.06".
No experience with the Clark clamp.
All clamps can walk up the barrel and magazine. The CDM Gear clamp comes with special polymer pads that stick to the inside of the clamp, protect the finish of the weapon and stop movement. We also sell pads for clamps other than our own. The CDM gear clamp is also the lightest clamp on the market, lighter than even the factory Remington clamp. Clamps stop the rotation of the mag tube as they tend to unscrew under recoil.

Re: Is a clamp really necessary for me?
I only just discovered this CDM Gear BMT clamp and I'm glad I did. This clamp is looking like the one I will be purchasing. It's a little bit more expensive than the Nordic, but I hope it shows in quality.CDM Gear wrote:All clamps can walk up the barrel and magazine.
