I'm sure the bolt's seen some miles, but unless there's visible damage, the parts should fine. Completely disassembling the bolt is a fair bit of hassle for parts that you're not sure need to be replaced.

Once you get the gun set up the way you like it, buy a case of cheap target loads and some of your intended HD ammo, and spend a day abusing your shoulder. Then pull the gun apart again and inspect everything again. If there's something wrong, it'll likely show up there.

I believe the extended vs. flush safety is largely a personal thing. I can see why a lot of folks like them, but I don't think they're the best choice for everyone. Personally, with my hands and the stocks & grip I use, the factory safety is perfect. I can flick it off without shifting my grip or even taking my finger off the trigger, and the flush button lets me feel whether it's on or off almost instantly without any doubt. I can tell you right now that for me, a big-head safety would be less comfortable, no faster, and probably less safe.

Again, a lot of folks do prefer the enlarged safety buttons for defensive roles, and that may be the case for you. Just understand that there are always trade-offs for things like this, and no one option will always be the best choice for everyone. Safety buttons are very easy to change on an 870, so you can always go back to the factory button if you try out an aftermarket one and decide you don't like it. If you don't want to risk spending the money on a product you're not sure about, I would suggest putting in some practice time with the factory safety. Handling/operating drills and some basic shooting practice at the range should give you a better idea if the factory button works well for you, or if an aftermarket safety might offer a net benefit. Keep in mind that either option will take practice to get the full potential out of, so don't be too hasty about deciding.

THANKS! I have gotten so much good advice here, I really appreciate the site and participants!

I have got my 870 Magnum into pre-duty testing condition. I switched out several parts, some just because I wanted to eliminate a question from my mind and others to finish the flex-tab upgrade, and refinished the wood for what I like for a duty rifle. (I just couldn't leave the wood alone..) Now the mechanical parts all seem to be in order, so this week it will be operational testing. 100 rds against clay targets on quickie wire holders (all of which I learned here...). If all goes well there, then full cleaning, load (condition 2), and ready for HD duty. My kids are all over 28, firearms trained, no grandkids yet, no little ones around, so I keep a number of firearms about the hidden house in condition 2. Just what I feel best about doing.
