Follower issues ???

Post by tekrsq »

What's the deal with everyone switching their stock followers ? Is it just a cool upgrade or is there an issue? I've put 1000's of rds through various police issued, non modified 870's over the years, and about 500 rds through my personal tactical 870 over the last year or so. Never had a problem with any of them.

I don't really understand why the factory follower gets so much hate either. With the hi-visibility color, I consider them an improvement over followers Remington has used in the past. Despite all the complaints about the plastic being flimsy or unreliable, I have yet to see one actually break or fail. Remington does use the same follower in Police and military 870s, which wouldn't be the case if they lived up to their reputation.

I usually run an aftermarket follower in my 870 - a modified S&J follower - simply because it's easier to detect by touch than the factory one. That's pretty much it. I have no issues with the factory follower, and I still use it in some builds when I want to maximize the usable space in my magazine.

That's good to know. I couldn't decide if I was just lucky or missing something. I like to keep my weapons simple, and believe that the manufacturers "usually" know what they're doing when designing a weapon. Therefore, I typically only upgrade a part if there is a design flaw or to improve my useability.

I changed mine simply because I don't like plastic parts on my shotgun..
