More of a restoration than a build... I picked this old 870 Wingmaster riot gun up at a West Virginia pawn shop a couple years ago for $125. Even though it had the finish all worn off, one sling swivel missing, the other one broken and the stock beat up and cracked, it still looked like it had some life left in it.

I had the metal re-Parkerized by Knox Metal Refinishing of Marietta, Ohio. I replaced the broken stock with one of the same vintage style found on Ebay. It was cleaned with alcohol to remove all the built-up grease and crud, the dents and scuffs steamed out, sanded, and refinished with several applications of boiled linseed oil. The sloppily stenciled rack number on the original was duplicated on the replacement stock, the property tag polished and the skull-cracking curved aluminum buttplate repainted. The missing/broken sling swivels were replaced with a pair of Uncle Mike's detachable swivels and an older black leather military sling added. A few applications of Johnson's paste wax on the stock finished the job.

Absolutely beautiful! I love the look of a good riot gun, and one that is older with some history is even better. Thats the whole reason I bought mine, but sadly, mine is all new and has no history or character.

Thank you. I wish I knew more about its history. When I first saw it in the rack at the pawn shop I wondered what stories it might have to tell if it could.

That looks great, Wjphott. Restored duty shotguns are always cool, but former prison 870s are some of the best. You know they've had the living snot beat out of them since day one, but with a little TLC, they look and function just as nice as an 870 that was a babied family heirloom all its life.

Updated pic of my police magnum since I replaced the bead barrel with the rifle sight barrel. They felt so much better to me when I shot it the other day.

Looks great, have you taken it to the range yet to sight in?

Yup. Needed to bring the rear sight down a little and discovered a bend or ding or something on the sight dovetail. Had to remove it to be able to lower the sight. Moves freely now, and it's all adjusted.

a work in progress , this is it so far , I might reconfigure it once more with different furniture once I run several boxes of different types of ammo through it if I am not satisfied with it the way it is. , shooting it is the best part of owning it.

Here's mine. The only thing I've done so far is put on the magpul stock. Short term plans include a new follower and an oversized safety (any recommendations on either?). Long term plans include a barrel swap for the threaded barrel so I can put on a tacti cool breacher choke.

I prefer the flush factory safety button, but I do like the added functionality of an aftermarket follower. The factory followers function fine, but the right type of aftermarket follower can make it easier to check if your magazine is empty by touch. I think the best on the market are the S&J Hardware followers machined from high-visibility Delrin acetal resin. I've worked with this polymer before, and it's ideal for this application. It's chemically stable, wear-resistant, low-friction, and easy to work with and modify if you want to. Other followers tend to be made from lower-quality plastics, or from metal, which has more friction and can increase wear. Shipping from Canada is a little spendy if you're in the US, but you can often find them in "buy it now" postings on Ebay with less expensive (or free) shipping.

If you just want to add chokes, and you're fine with the barrel otherwise, you can probably find a gunsmith who will thread it for choke tubes for less than it would cost to buy a whole new barrel.
