Rolling Thunder drill.

Post by mercman »

Has anyone played this SG game? A group of SG'ers stand in a line with unloaded SG's and rounds in a pocket or pouch ready to go. Starting at one end the first shooter combat loads a round and fires, followed by each shooter down the line. When the last shooter in line fires the first shooter starts the round again firing continues down the line, looping until all rounds are expended. Fun drill.

Yep, I did it last fall at a defensive shotgun class. Lots of fun.

Yes, the rolling thunder drill is a lot of fun. I think it is particularly instructive to start with empty 870s... Load and shoot as quick as you can. Pop a shell into the open ejection port [if that's how you were trained], otherwise, into the tube and then pump the slide action to load the first shell--your preference. While other folks struggle to get off their round in sequence, you'll have a so-called "combat" reload and a shell or two in the magazine as you start to gain time.

Good luck and have fun with your 870s! :)

Just standard drills like slug select drills and immediate action drills. For instance, clearing a jam by driving the buttstock onto a hard surface, or swiping the side of the action to remove a hull that doesn't clear the ejection port. Whatever malfunctions the range gods can dream up for us.

Nowadays most guys are carrying an M4 style carbine and only a few of us still keep an 870 in our cruisers...........

Each has advantages, so why not both? Last time I walked past a parked cruiser in my town, it had a 12ga and an AR between the front seats.

I invented a drill (I'm sure its been done before) where you have 2 shotgunners. You walk forward and on one shooters cue he yells THREAT! or the tactical word of your choice. At that time you both stop, fire at the target and walk backwards while feeding a new round into the magazine. Now as soon as the OTHER shooter who didn't call threat last time finishes feeding his gun a round he can yell THREAT! and if you haven't fed your round in yet you must drop everything and fire. The object is to get the other guy to run dry. Kinda like its you vs. Him in a gunfight but your next to each other. You can only feed one round per lull so if you miss one reload you'll be a round down from then until you miss the next round. Every threat call means shoot, change direction and try to feed a round before the other guy calls threat again.

This drill helps with loading, moving, communicating and thinking under stress.

I call it the Versus drill. It can be very fun and a major brain freeze at times. Especially with new shooters.
