Hey guys!
I had a question, I just purchased my first Rem870 Tactical its the 7 shot simple version. I want a breach on it...I stuck my finger down the barrel and didn't feel any threads. I've seen some "remchokes" online that look like they are breaches with threads....would this work on my 870? Do I have to buy another barrel? I really appreciate your time, thanks in advance.
870 Breach
Re: 870 Breach
Congradulations on your purchase of a fine shotgun.
Not all 870 models come with a factory RemChoke installed. Yours sounds like a fixed cylinder bore; no provision for changing chokes. If this is the case, you won't be able to install the breacher choke (or any other choke). Buying another barrell is an option however, there are alternatives. Your local gunsmith may be able to cut threads into your existing barrell (I understand this can be expensive and you are out of a working shotgun while it's getting worked on). There are a variety of aftermarket attachments that can attach directly to or replace magazine extensions such as the ones here:

Here's one that threads onto the end of the barrell:

Re: 870 Breach
Welcome FreznoGrizzly and congradulations on the new 870. Good things lay ahead.
I agree with everything EdwardE said.
From your post it seems to me that you have the model 25077, which is the basic 870 Tactical: synthetic stock and forend, one piece 6 round magazine and cylinder bore barrel (not threaded to accept a choke). Your shotgun most likely did not come with a choke tool either. If this is your model, only one other Remington barrel will fit your shotgun. That is the barrel that comes on the model 81209 Tactical Magpul. The barrel on the Magpul is threaded and the shotgun comes with a breach adapter installed. That barrel also has a fwd rifle sight instead of the bead.
The reason only those two barrels will fit is because the mounting ring on your barrel is moved forward to account for the extended magazine. The only other shotgun to come with one of these barrels is the model 81404 Tactical Blackhawk! model which comes with the cylinder bore barrel like the basic Tactical. No other Remington barrel will fit these three shotguns.
The simple fix for your breech adapter would be to purchase the Magpul's barrel. The less expensive fix is to have your local gunsmith cut threads into your barrel and purchase the breech adapter from Remington.
I own the model 25077 870 Tactical with the cylinder bore barrel and I love it. Other than having the breech adaptrer as a "tacti-cool" accessory for WOW factor, I personally don't see the need on an HD shotgun. I am not going to be blowing the doorknobs off in my own home.

Re: 870 Breach
Awesome, thanks guys. Yeah the breach is pretty much a tacticool touch I wanted to add....but if that barrel is a bunch of money it might have to wait Lol.
I have one other question....I can shoot any type of HD ammo right? Or slugs, buck and bird shot?
I appreciate the thorough answers from you both. That helped a lot and answered my question and some.
Would you happen to know where I can find that barrel when I do decide to get it?

Re: 870 Breach
For the record, you can blow a lock or hinge just fine without a breaching stand-off or fancy ammunition. Internet commandos love to show off with specialized shotguns and ammunition, but whenever I see actual soldiers breaching a door with a shotgun, they just stick the barrel of a normal 590A1 or M1014 against the door and let loose with a round of buckshot. The teeth on the stand-off help keep the muzzle in place as you turn your face away and pull the trigger, but that's about it.Zebra62 wrote:Other than having the breech adaptrer as a "tacti-cool" accessory for WOW factor, I personally don't see the need on an HD shotgun. I picked up one of those breaching chokes last spring when I stumbled across one for a good price, but so far I've only used it for pattern testing (since it's a cylinder bore tube), and once to cut up some firewood so I could cook dinner in the woods. I may also use it to cut down the family Christmas tree this year, but my 18.5" cylinder bore bead-sight barrel worked perfectly fine on last year's tree. For HD, I just use basic flush-mount choke tubes.
If your barrel has a cylinder bore, you can shoot any ammo that's actually safe to use to begin with.xFrEzNoGriZzLYx wrote:I have one other question....I can shoot any type of HD ammo right? Or slugs, buck and bird shot?
You'd probably be able to order it from Remington, though they haven't updated their parts list since they introduced the Magpul model, so I can't give you an item number or price.xFrEzNoGriZzLYx wrote:Would you happen to know where I can find that barrel when I do decide to get it?
But, as Zebra62 mentioned, that barrel has a front blade sight that's meant to be used in conjunction with a receiver-mounted aperture. If you do want to use a breaching choke on your gun, you'd probably be better off having your existing barrel threaded for chokes like EdwardE suggested. You should be able to have it done for less than the cost of another barrel, and you'll keep your current bead sight.
