Building up a Police Magnum 870. Nothing fancy, but having fun.
When I shoot it there is a pronouncing ringing I hear, especially as the gun is mounted. It's like your hearing without ear protection. Another forum suggest that the cause is the "spring modulator", and that it should simply be removed. That part is not listed in the stock 870 schematic. Supposedly, it was added to this model to handle the heavier magnum loads.
Any ideas? I doesn't effect the function, but it does bother me during training and practice. I need to dampen whatever is oscillating.

Re: Police Magnum ringing
I'm not sure what you mean by "ringing". Is it a prolonged, single-frequency sound like something vibrating at a harmonic rate, or a short sound that could be due to the acoustics of your shooting location? Can you figure out where on the gun the sound is coming from? And does this only happen when you're shooting, or do you hear the same sound when you dry-fire the gun?
I have no idea what a "spring modulator" is, the word "modulator" isn't even mentioned at all in Remington's parts list (which is for all their guns, not just the 870). The closest thing I can think of is the magazine spring retainer, but those are only used in 870s that don't have magazine extensions, and as far as I know, Police 870s without magazine extensions use the old-style metal spring retainers that shouldn't be able to move around under recoil. There are some aftermarket add-ons that claim to reduce recoil, and use springs. Do you have anything like that installed on the gun?

Re: Police Magnum ringing
By "ringing" I mean a sound like a ringing in your ears, at a constant pitch, but I hear when the gun is mounted with my cheek on the comb after a shot. It continues for a while.
The gun is set up with a Vang Comp extension tube, and the spring is new and correct. No recoil reduction parts are installed, and I'm using the stock buttstock.
Not a big deal, but unusual. I'll be training a good amount with this gun and would like it to not be ringing all the time when I do.
Thanks.
