Steel Shot

Steel shot .... I have an 870 Express that I purchased around 1990 .... I was wondering if I could use steel shot.

I just looked up the serial # and it was manufactured in 1994

The 870 can handle steel shot, but make sure your choke tubes are also rated for steel shot of the size and velocity you plan on using. Even steel-rated tubes can have trouble digesting steady diets of large and/or fast steel shot, so keep an eye on them and replace them when necessary.

On the off chance your gun has a fixed choke, I wouldn't use steel shot in anything tighter than Modified.
