Post by All ways right »

Hello,

My father in law gave me a 870 express 20ga 5 years ago for Xmas. I cant get rid of it. The wife said she would be up set. I have only shot it 5 times. I want to start it as a project gun. I am have having problem finding up grades for tactical parts. Can anyone send me to any websites that offer 20ga 870 stock, barrels ect.

Thank you,
Michael AKA: All Ways Right, guy humor me please. I all tell the wife I am all ways right and will not listen. Well it nice to know you guy call me All Ways Right.

Welcome to the forum.

Remington offers a decent variety of 20ga barrels that you can order through their customer service department. You should be able to find something that meets your needs.

As for other accessories, it'll depend on what kind of gun you're trying to build. There isn't as much aftermarket support for the small-frame 870s as there is for the large-frame 870s, but you should be able to find enough parts to put together a practical, functional defensive 20ga. On the other hand, if you want to build some pimped-out, "tacti-cool" range toy with all kinds of bells and whistles hanging off it, you'll have to get more creative.

Were there some specific accessories you had in mind? And what type of gun are you starting with?

Welcome, All Ways Right.

I bought an 870 20 guage for my wife to have on hand as an HD weapon here at home. She viewed it with much scepticism but has warmed to it nicely. It doesn't kick her nearly as hard as my Tactical and is lighter for her to handle. She has become quite good with it in the last few months.

While the list of accesories for the 20 gauge are fewer than for the 12 gauge, you can still put together a low cost yet VERY effective weapon. Get on MidwayUSA.com or Brownells and do some searching and you will find some things. Choate has a wide variety of 20 ga. mag extensions. I put a five round extension on ours and can get 10 + 1 with 2 3/4 shells. Choate also makes a few different pistol grip stocks to fit the smaller frame. Mesa Tactical makes an 8 round side saddle for the 20 ga. also. For shell carrying on a belt, I strongly recommend the California Competition Works Shell Stripper. CCW will tell you they will not work for the 20 ga. shells, but I will tell you they will. My wife has two of them and they hold seven rounds each. Get the cover for the carriers also.

As Synchronizer has already said, all the tacti-cool toys may reguire creativity.

Enjoy and let us know what you come up with.

+3! ;)

If I had my druthers, I'd have a Remington 870 20-gauge with an 18-1/2-in. cylinder bore barrel, a seven-shot tube magazine, ghost ring aperture sights, a 12-3/4-in. length of pull conventional butt stock and a four to six shot side-saddle for extra ammunition, and a simple weapon light of some kind. For my money, that would be the best defensive 20-gauge defensive shotgun for my perceived needs.

As it happened, I was gifted a 12-ga. Remington 870 Express and used that as the basis of my defensive "build" thinking I could modify it back for use in shotgun sports and upland bird hunting... Then I blew my saved up "gun money" on a Smith and Wesson/Howa 3000 "870 clone" riot gun, so now I've got two mechanically identical 12-gauges. [I know, I know, "such a pity!" ] These days, probably on account of reading this forum, I've got the idea to get a used ex-PD Wingmaster for use as a "project gun" to do some of my own shade tree gun tinkery on... :geek:

Good luck! You didn't indicate in your post what would have been preferable to you? :?:
