Hey, I'm back been over a year since I was here....
I've got an 870 xpress man. in '97/'98. I recently purchased some 3" slugs and started thinking- do I need a rifled barrel or will my stock 28" barrel be adequate?
Thanks.

It depends on what type of slugs they are. If they're sabot slugs, they'll need a rifled barrel to stabilize and fly accurately. Otherwise, any smoothbore barrel will work so long as it doesn't have a really tight choke. A 28" bird or clay-shooting barrel won't have the best sights for slugs (unless you've installed something else yourself), but they'll shoot just fine.

I'm just going to chime in and expand a little more. Check to see if your slugs are already rifled. If so, you should be fine with any smooth barrel dependant upon choke as Synchro has recommended. He has a good head on his shoulder concerning all things 870 and is one of the resident experts. It depends on what type of slugs they are.

I've got Winchester 2 3/4" slugs. Walmart stock.....States that they are hollow-point and fire from a smooth bore. Thank you for helping.
