MESA 5"saddle rail with 6 shell holder
Thinking about mounting this on my 870 Tactical. What's the best red dot or holographic sight for the money ? Any pros or cons on the mount?

Aimpoint Micro, H1 or T1...

The H1& H2 are $600 & $700 . That's nearly twice what I gave for the shotgun.

The mount is great, solid construction and a space to see the bead if need be.

You asked for the "Best"... Shop around, look for group buys. I got on a group buy on my H1 (4moa) and I think it was barely $400. Also you can look for someone looking to move from a 4moa to a 2moa dot. Check AR15.com for deals.wheres the bears wrote:The H1& H2 are $600 & $700 . That's nearly twice what I gave for the shotgun.
There's always the aimpoint PRO, although a solid sight might be a bit big for your project but can easily be found for $400.
If you want affordable you can go to Primary Arms and get something around $100 but it may or may not last. People have had good luck with them but don't expect aimpoint performance, battery life or durability.
It's not uncommon for optics/glass to cost 1 to 2x more than the weapon itself. Look at some precision builds, optics can be staggering.

Eotech sights are often used on shotguns too:

I've got that Mesa Mount/Combo on my 870, and i can't think of anything other than it's just a great addition to an 870, i love mine!. I've shopped around for Eotechs, Aimpoints and Trijicons and i can't get past the price. I'm working on getting an new 870P, and it will cost about the same as some og the optics brands talked about here. I've seen Eotechs, close to $700.00, yeah thats getting the best in optics, but i'd rather have a brand spankin new 870P or Police Magnum than a Great Holographic sight. Thats just me though, if you want the best, ya have to pay a fortune to get it.

Not uncommon to spend 1-2x the price of the gun on your optic.

Take a look at the Vortex "Sparc". Great "smaller" red dot for a economical price and have nothin but great reviews. I will be picking one up soon for my shotgun. I can see spending Aimpoint or Trijicon money on a carbine but not on a shotgun.
Re: MESA 5
Thats what i think too. I have a Truglo Triton Red Circledot sight, and it does take the recoil of my shotgun. I removed it for two reasons; it only had thumbscrews to tighten it up and i was always having to add Loctite Purple to keep it on, second it did'nt hold zero after 20 rds. I do like a good Holographic/Red Dot sight, but i refuse to pay what they cost for the best ones. Especially, as you said, for a shotgun.JBall wrote:Take a look at the Vortex "Sparc". I do however very much recommend the Mesa 6 rd Sidesaddle/5" Rail. It's a great option, and upgrade for your 870.
