Snagged an older 870 Express that I wanted to set up as a home use gun. This gun has the aluminum trigger guard, upgraded follower, non MIM Extractor and doesn't have the dimples in the magazine tube.
First I ordered an 18.5" IC Barrel.
Length of pull is too long for me to comfortably shoulder so it's time to chop.
Sand down the recoil buffer
Try and get the stock and 870 police wood forend to match
Install new wood Cobb forend
Done!!!
37.5" overall
12.75" length of pull

Re: Old School Riot Gun Project
A job well done. I've done the same a few times with some older Wingmasters that I picked up at garage sales. Very gratifying when you put a few down range with something that you've modded. Enjoy.

Excellent refinish project. Very nice on the shorter 12.75" length-of-pull! Looks good. I've got an old Pontiac, MI police S&W/Howa riot gun with parkerized finish and plain wood. The stock is a bit too long. Thanks for posting the pics!

Nice color on the wood. Recoil pads are fun to sand down, huh?
Re: Old School Riot Gun Project
Having a kmg knife grinder made easy work out if the recoil pad.
Re: Old School Riot Gun Project
I have a small Harbor Freight belt sander I used on my Grind-to-fit Limbsaver. I took LOTS of grinding though.
This on my other 870 I sent the stock off to Bob Day http://www.americhoke.com and had him fit a Pachmayr Decelerator as I wanted to make sure this one turned out! It takes a lot of patience no doubt. 12.25" LOP for mine.

Not everyone can pull off a grind to fit pad installation. I've got a great local gunsmith who absolutely does excellent pad installations. Also cuts the stock at the correct angle to make it more user friendly as well. Competent gunsmiths are worth their weight in gold in my opinion. There is however a sense of great accomplishment doing installations of this nature yourself.
