870 Sup Mag Sling Swivel Cap

Post by wagswvu »

I have a 870 super mag that I have been making some upgrades too. The last thing I wanted is to add a sling ability. I have the butt stock covered with my new Magpul SGA, but finding a swivel CAP has been pretty hard. I order a BlackHawk Cap, from amazon, that claimed to be for internal ratcheting, but turned out to be for a ball detent style. Uncle Mike's has a similar version but they have a disclaimer that it's not for super mag. So I'm at a loss. Can somebody point to something that would work, or could I install a swivel stud in my stock cap?

I'm not sure why you're having trouble finding a swivel cap that fits. I have a 870 Super Mag as well, and i've been told (and i know) that basicly the magazine tube is no dif than an 870 express. Basicly the S.Mag is an 870 express except for the bolt, ejection port, and pump sliders (length of the slides and forend inner tube). The ID and OD of the mag tube are the same. I've had a swivel cap, and several mag extensions mounted on my mag tube (all made for the 870/Express/Tactical, etc.). Unless you have a brand new S.Mag and something has changed (which i doubt) i'm not sure why you're having trouble with that part. All i can suggest is that you go to you're local gun store, talk to the gunsmith and see whats going on. If i remember right, i had an Uncle Mikes swivel cap on my Super Mag. Good Luck.
Oh yeah BTW i have an 870 Express Super Mag thats about 8 Yrs old. I'm not sure if Remington makes a non- 870 Express Super Mag?

I don't see why that wouldn't work seeing as what auto says is true! I'd spend the few bucks and give it a try!

All the 870 caps are the same to my knowledge.

I guess what I was trying to get at is what would work? I bought 3 different caps and they all claimed to be internal ratcheting, but turn out to be ball-detend. The Uncle Mike's Quick Detachable one I'm seeing on amazon, from the reviews, seems to be ratcheting type. However, it says in the description and Uncle Mike's website that it's not for the 870 with 3 1/2 mag.

Does anybody have this cap for their Super Mag? Does it work ok?

You may want to look at keeping your stock cap and just adding one of the sling adapters from GG&G. Basically it's a plate that sandwiches between your cap and barrel, they have them in loop or QD types.

I have a cap that I ordered online. It exactly matches the OEM cap from my Rem 860 Tactical Express. Will this work for you? If so you are welcome to it.

I bought the QD version of one of those, and I wasn't very impressed. It's too thick to allow my magazine extension to be installed properly, leaving a gap that causes hang-ups, it will only fit one type of barrel contour once it's filed to fit, and the hard detent ball staked into it means I have to use pliers to install and remove an extension or magazine cap.

I wish I would have seen your post sooner, but you would be right on the money. Total fail for the GG&G, it's just like you said. It's going back to Midway. I'm just about ready to give up on sling.
