I always lock and store mine when, I am out of the house. However I got bored last weekend and built this. It is in a center location in my apartment so I can access it within seconds for HD purposes . However I will admit I keep it under my bed when I sleep. Do you guys have anything similar?
How do you mount your 870?
Re: How do you mount your 870?
Dang! Now that is creative! If a burglar broke in while you were away he'd be thinking "why is there a TP roll holder in that location?"
That is a great low-profile, low-cost set up. I have seen similar brackets that have a locking panel that goes around the receiver, but they are bigger.
In my case, the Rem. 870 is stored "cruiser ready" i.e. hammer down on an empty chamber, with four No.4 buck in the tube mag. Goes inside the safe when I leave the house, gets pulled out when I return and stashed between two book-cases, always in the same location. I have a short length-of-pull pistol-grip stock, however, rather than just a pistol-grip.

Very nice rig to hold your HD gun. Can't say I've ever seen extra shells stored up front like that, though. Seems like it'd be a slower reload than the traditional receiver or buttstock locations, no?

Very cool setup, Reeps. Necessity truely is the Mother of invention.
Our 870's aren't actually mounted anwhere yet. "Pinky", my Wife's Youth Express 20 gauge, stays on the shelf in the top of the closet behind a locked door most of the time. "Loretta", my Express Tactical 12 gauge, sleeps on a folded up blanket on the floor just under the edge of the bed. In the morning, she goes into the closet leaning in the corner.
I am currently drawing plans for a door mounted gun rack which I will bolt to the inside of the closet door to accomodate our ever growing family of long arms. Up until very recently, we only had my old British .303. Now we have two 870's and in the near future I will pre-inherit my Dad's old Browning A-5 and his old Marlin .22.
Not sure when I will have it built, but I will post a pick or two when I do.

I haven't fired it yet with the shells up front. The shell holder up front is not very solid so I have to store them the wrong direction for reloading. But by the time I have finished firing 11 rounds hopefully I will have enough time to load the front four. I also have a rear four shell tacstar side saddle on the back left side for immediate reloading needs.

That front-mounted shell holder looks pretty iffy to me. Relatively, it's a lot of added mass at the end of the gun, and you're already going to have trouble aiming it steadily without a shoulder stock. If you want more shells, there are better options. Mesa Tactical has shell carriers that can accommodate 8 shells on the right of the receiver and 4 on the left. There are also fixed, adjustable, and folding stocks that can carry extra shells. If you're going to add on the weight of a lot of extra ammo, it's best to have it toward the back of the gun, where it won't slow you down as much.
I keep my shotgun leaned against the wall, right next to my bed; empty chamber, full magazine (Estate 2,75" 00B at the moment, I still haven't been able to find the smaller-sized buckshot loads I prefer for HD since ammo demand skyrocketed). My Glock 31 sits fully-loaded within arm's reach of the bed as well. My apartment consists of one primary room, with a kitchen and bathroom off of it. The front door is less than 5 yards from my bed, so I want to be able to act fast if I need to.

the front shell holder is removable via a picatinny rail, so I take it off every now and then. I also agree that it is iffy, but I will find out next time I shoot it.
Re: How do you mount your 870?
I managed to get my rack built and installed today.
Gypsy was skeptical as she usaully is about my creations when she first sees them on the bench in the shop, but was happy when I hung it and it actually worked. My tactical is on the far right at 39 inches, then is my .303 at 39 1/2 inches, Gypsy's 20 gauge is next at 45 1/2 inches and the dowel on the far left is a space saver for my Dad's old Browning A-5 when I finally pick it up. The Browning is 49 inches. Lots of space on top for ammo and things.
As an afterthought, I mounted one of my three cell maglights on the center cross piece.
My tactical will still sleep on a blanket next to the bed overnight and be placed in the rack in the morning when I pull down my Mossberg Cruiser. The only one that is not currently loaded is the .303, but a full magazine is within reach. All the shotguns have magazines full of 2 3/4 Federal OO, and empty chambers. .303 has Remington 174 grain FMJ.

That's a nice setup, Zebra62. Do you have plans for that rack that you'd be able to post here?
