Barrel extension overhang into ejection port.

Post by MStarmer »

I've noticed this in several pictures of 870's. Is this common? When I'm cleaning mine I keep looking at thinking that it needs to be "fine tuned" and flushed up with the edge of the ejection port. Excuse the poor cell phone pic but I think you get the idea.

Suggestions? Dress it back, leave it alone?

Thanks,

That doesn't look normal to me. I doubt it'll affect function, the 870 doesn't rely on ultra-precise part fit, but it is kind of unsightly.

Can you post a close-up of the barrel extension with the bolt open? Here are some shots with one of my barrels for comparison:

Wow, yours are a significantly better fit. I took 2 more pics. At first I though maybe it got dropped and bent the corner of the extension but looking at it apart it obviously is too thick for that, it just appears to maybe be "tolerance stacking"? Looks like I could take it down flush without any issues?

I'd check to make sure there isn't a gap between the receiver and the top of the barrel extension. It'd also be smart to have a professional look at it in person before you start cutting on it. That's not something you want to do lightly.

A call into Remington, they said e-mail them the pic.

Looks very strange. Please let us know what they think about this.

Of course I just installed a XS front sight on this barrel too.... JB Weld website says 600 deg F will get it back off though, somehow I don't think the sight would survive...

Even tried it today with an express barrel, I have a feeling it's the receiver now. Other barrel fits as bad or worse. :crying:

To Remington's credit they already have contacted me and want the whole thing back for evaluation.

Is the gun not functioning properly? Mine looks like yours and works fine. Just chalk it up as fine Remington craftsmanship and move on. Remington will probably take the gun, function test it, and send it back with a seal of approval.

Seemed to function fine but for the price and quality expected on a "P" model I found it unacceptable. I looked at several 870's yesterday. Express, Tactical, Magpul and other 870P's and saw none that were to this extent. Some had a little mismatch here and there but mine it looks like the ejection port was milled too high or something. I might have a bit more tolerance if it was a $299 Express from Walmart, but not this model.

Remington should have it today or tomorrow (haven't checked my tracking #) so I should know fairly quickly what they think. They provided return label and instructions within 24hrs of me contacting them so I am very impressed so far. I'm hoping I stay that way. Luckily I scored a polished blue and walnut 870P to ease my separation anxiety in it's absence.
