Forend not releasing

Post by Raider08 »

Hi,

I inherited my grandpa's 870 a few years ago, and due to a busy college schedule, I haven't had time to even get it out of the gun cabinet. It needs a good cleaning, so I started to get it apart, but can't get the forend free.

Here's the gun

When I press down on the little metal clip on the inside of the action, it releases about a centimeter and hangs up. Any ideas?

It's pretty old. Here's the code on the barrel.

I have a new 870 and there are two release points. One on each side of the receiver

Sliding the action bars and bolt out of the receiver can be a little finicky. Make sure the bolt isn't twisted, and the slide assembly & locking block aren't hanging up on anything. Then, following the instructions in the manual, press the left shell latch out of the way (you don't need to do anything with the right latch for disassembly) and slide the fore-end forward in a smooth motion. If it hangs up, don't force it. Just slide it back and try again. It may take a couple tries, but it should eventually slide on out with very little effort.

If you still can't get it, post here with some more details.

I'd give it a good cleaning but that patina on it is awesome. Guns with no blueing left are so cool. Too bad before any of mine look like that I'll probably be gone...
