hard chrome or nickel boron coating

Post by ponycarman »

Been updating my old wingmaster slowly to the flexitab system. I already have the carrier and I have been looking for the chromed bolt and slide to complete the conversion and maintain the look I have. I have had no luck in finding any. A new one is about $90. The only used one I have seen was the same price. All others were the old style bolts. I have seen that it is pretty easy and cheap to get an express bolt and slide pretty cheap. My question is does anyone know someone who can hard chrome or even nickel boron an 870 bolt and what are they prices like? If it is decently priced I may just buy a cheap bolt, strip it, and have it coated.

Just curious. Thanks guys

For some reason you (or the website) started two identical topics, so I deleted one copy.

I would check around and see if any of your local gunsmiths have the equipment to do that kind of plating, it really isn't that complicated with the right equipment, so I wouldn't think prices would be too unreasonable.

If you're interested, Caswell has a range of nifty plating and finishing kits - including chrome & nickel plating - that will allow you to do the work yourself. The kits are a little spendy if all you want to do is your 870 bolt, but if you also want to plate other components or firearms, this might be an option. Andrew Tuohy of Vuurwapen Blog wrote an informative post on his experiences using a Caswell nickel-plating kit on several of his handguns and some AR-15 parts, as well as a two-year follow-up post.

One day, I'd love to get a hold of a set of Marine Magnum internals and do a custom finish on them with some of Caswell's more advanced kits.

The various slide assemblies are only $20 or so from Remington, and since they're not really as visible a part of the action as the bolt, I wouldn't bother paying extra to have that refinished. The hammer and carrier dog will probably wear a lot of aftermarket finishes off that part anyway, which is why I think that part is just unfinished stainless steel (don't quote me on that, but it looks like a stainless alloy to me).

Thanks for the info. I'm only wanting to get the bolt done not the slide. I keep searching for them but never fibd anything reasonable. With a new bolt so expensive I don't know if I want to spend that much just yet. There was a used express bolt and slide for about $20 which is what got me thinking about this instead.

I may have just lucked out haha. I found a used chromed bolt on gunbroker. This is the proper bolt for the modification. It was $44. I am going to have to wait a little while to get it because payment is being made by personal check. No worries though, that might give me time to find the slide for it. $44 is much better than 90 haha.

Also as an added plus it is a complete bolt so I should have an extra non mim extraxtor to go in my express.
