Background Check: "RESEARCH"

Post by DarwinsFlinch »

I am in agony. I ordered an 870 Express Slug and tried to pick it up on 2/16. After waiting several hours in "delayed" status I drove home (45 minutes) and told the Virginia FFL to call me when the approval came in. When I followed up on 2/17, I was advised I was in "research" and there was nothing they could do about it until they got an answer. I think I've been patient in letting it sit without bugging them and here we are, 10 days later, and I am still in "research."

My last name is not that common, used my DL and Utah CC as ID, gave up my SSN. I have purchased a hand gun in Maryland so I know my record is clean. So what the hell? Any Virginia buyers experience this before?

Perhaps they pick one out of every so many to dig into deeper? Not really sure. My checks have always been 15min tops.

The only issue I had when I picked up my new 870 last month was the fact that I had neglected to update my address on my DL after a recent move. But we sorted it out relatively quickly and I walked out the door with it just a few minutes later.

Thats some BS man i hope it gets corrected. Im not familiar with your system but couldnt they cancel and resubmit or something? Sounds like it was left for dead. In CA they have 10 days to say denied. If they say nothing its good to go.

As Kentactic mentioned, I believe most areas have a maximum limit on how long a background check can delay the delivery of a firearm. Unless the authorities specifically flag the check as requiring further study (essentially a criminal investigation, as I understand it), the FFL is required to allow you to take possession of the firearm once that time is passed.

With all the gun purchases being processed right now, the system, which wasn't exactly running like a well-oiled machine to begin with, has been pushed to its limits (and the anti-gun brainiacs think it would be a great idea to implement "universal" background checks, and funnel even more traffic through it).

In Washington, my CPL excuses me from waiting periods on firearms, and allows for a less intense background check. I picked up a new gun from my FFL last month, who works out of his home using a laptop to connect to the NCIC. When he saw that I had my license, he remarked that it would greatly speed up the process since he wouldn't have to submit the information to an agency that tended to take a long time to reply (I don't remember specifics, I was focused on trying to fill out the paperwork while his dog kept trying to lick my writing hand).

I agree with Kentactic, you should get in touch with your dealer, and have them either resubmit the check, or just give you the gun if your state allows it.

Approved one month to the day. Guy misspelled my name DESPITE having it on two forms and two IDs. Idiot. Saved me money, though, since I bought one privately. Even paying the return shipping on this one I still saved a hundred or so.
