Remington 870 ejection problems

Post by larryhorne »

Hello,
I traded for a like new Remington 870 a while back, and am having problems with it ejecting spent shells. I can load and cycle unfired rounds all day, but when I shoot it, the gun is very hard/almost impossible to work the pump and eject the fired round. Anyone else have this problem, and know a fix for it? The gun looks like it hasn't been fired much at all, so I don't think anything is worn out.

How does it cycle without any shells in the firearm, specifically is anything sticking? Has the shotgun been field stripped and cleaned? The ejection problems could be caused by several issues (But not limited to) like, bent or broken ejector, bent action bar assembly, bent or damaged shell latch, or a bent carrier.

I would first suggest a thorough cleaning. This will help eliminated that there isn't any gummy build up hindering things. While you are cleaning, look for any parts that appear to be broken or bent. Is there any debris where it doesn't belong, I have found things like pieces of twiggs, cat tail fuzz residue, K9 fuzz, and gummy build up from solvents left behind that were hindering things, and once cleaned and lubed it worked fine.

If the action bars are bent, they will not function smooth through their tracks (rails) of the receiver. A bent or broken ejector or ejector spring will cause issues. If the carrier, which is the part the lifts the shells up to to chamber, is bent upwards it will cause issues of things dragging.

I have also seen where someone screwed down a scope mount on top of the receiver for deer hunting, and the screws went too far into the receiver, and caused the shells to drag when the action was cycled to the rear.

Take a look at a few of these things, and see if any of them are it, if not then report back and maybe one of us can figure it out.
