Age old supermag ejection issues.

Post by Cnthitsht »

I have an 870 super mag. And when it ejects the hull it barely clears the gun if it does at all. I have done hours of reading and tuning trying to figure this damn thing out. I’m pretty mechanically inclined so usually things of this nature are sorted pretty easily for me. I have never had a shell fail to extract from the barrel. The extractor is a non mim extractor. The ejector spring is not broken or distorted in any way. I rack the absolute **** out of this gun and it barely dribbles out of the chamber if it even does that. I think I have figured out what’s happening but I don’t know how to fix it. What seems to be happening is when the extractor pulls the hull out as soon as the hull clears the breach the shell tries to kick outward and it just kind of spins out of the grip of the extractor 90 degrees and sits there until I manually clear the hull. I’m hoping I’m explaining it well enough. It’s not throwing the hull because it never makes down quite far enough to hit the ejector spring. I’ve tried taking the gun apart and using a hull with very fine sand paper wrapped around it to sand/polish the little guide rails the ejector spring it’s self sits down in between. I though maybe the brass on the shell was getting hung up on those small rails and that was causing the shell to want to flip out like that. Any input is appreciated.

Incase anyone has the same issue and comes across this I thought I would post what seems to have helped my issue. So as I stated the empty hull was trying to turn its self 90 degrees as soon as it cleared the breech which would result in the the extractor loosing its grip on the brass and not carrying it back to the ejector spring to be thrown out of the gun. So i disassembled the gun and took a spent hull and simulated it sliding down the 2 small rails where the ejector spring is recessed into and discovered that about the spot the hull clears the breech it wasn’t very smooth almost like it was catching on a burr even tho I couldn’t feel anything with my finger. So I took some 800 grit sand paper and wrapped it around the hull and used it to polish the heck out of the 2 rails until the brass glided along it like glass. I have since shot the gun about a dozen times and it has performed flawlessly. I bought this gun second hand and was told it was very lightly used which I believe as it still had the stickers on the stock and no signs of wear anywhere. I wouldn’t doubt the previous owner had the same issue and replaced the gun. I do think the problem would have resolved it’s self after A lot of shooting. I have shot probably 3-4 boxes through it up until this point. I’m very happy with how it performs now. If the problem persists or something else comes up I will come back and add to this post.

Hi,

How does the design and construction of shotgun hulls influence their performance during ejection?
