Good morning,
So I inherited a 12 gauge 870 express magnum that came with a field barrel and a smooth slug barrel. Question regarding the slug barrel, can I shoot buckshot through it or should I stick with lead slugs? There is no choke on the barrel.
Thanks!
Ken

Re: Express Magnum Slug barrel
Greetings KoolKid123 and welcome to the forum.
You should not have any problems shooting any size shot through the smooth barrel. Smooth bore barrels are designed for shot, and that includes all shot from the smallest bird shot up to 000. You can even use slugs through them.
I do have a question though, is the barrel in question not threaded for a choke (called a cylinder bore) or is it threaded and just does not have a choke?
I would think if it is a cylinder bore with no threads for a choke, it is probably somewhere in the 18-to-20-inch range and is intended for home defense use. The other barrel, the field barrel as you call it, is probably threaded for a choke, is somewhere between 24 to 26 inches in length and is intended for hunting fowl. The field barrel probably also has a vented rib across the top.
Remington offered many Express models with both barrels as a combination to fit dual purposes.
