SOS - Stranded Old Sailor

Post by Old Matelot »

Good Morning All, Just found this Forum thanks to the very helpful Synchronizor YT Channel. I'm a long time pistol shooter with limited long gun time and zero shotgun hours, recently beached in San Antonio TX to finish LTC cert. and wait out any post-midterm Hurricanes that may be brewing. Decided that I'd like something more versatile and with more giddy-up than my Sig P938 and Shield 9 mm for home defence, so I recently picked up an almost new 870 Tactical and some 12Ga. snap caps to dry practice with. The Blunderbuss came with a Hogue pistol grip and Mesa/Magpul adjustable stock that looked cool but didn't seem very effective or comfortable for me. I just swapped it for a more conventional Hogue short (12" LOP) stock and now both cheek weld and sight picture are much improved. I'm pretty happy with loading/unloading and general manipulation so I'm ready for a first range visit. I'm already good with safety, range etiquette and all the basics so I'm reluctant to pony up a chunk of change for formal class but any 870-specific tips from the Group here for that initial experience would be most welcome...choice of ammo, basic drills, do's and dont's, etc, etc. Thanks in advance.

Hey ship-mate, welcome aboard. The MagPul SGA butt stock (not like yours) is adjustable for LOP by adding spacers, and you can add cheek risers in multiple thicknesses. What I like is that you can't really tell by looking...looks great and handles great. I like the straight stock you have on there now, but when you get an extra $70, give it a shot (bwahahahaaa). Actually, go the range. Someone will like have one on their shotty and would be happy to let you fondle. 😊
