I'm a retired LEO and owner of several 870's dating back to 1973. Lots of great information here and I'm glad I joined.
I do have a question for which I've not been able to find an answer:
In what year did Remington change the design of the shell carrier from solid to the one with a U-shaped cutout?
Thanks

Welcome to a fellow Floridian (Pinellas)! Not sure what you mean by u-shaped?
Do you mean the little u-shape cut in the shell lift? Mine all have that. Scorpion knows!

FloridaWing, welcome, and thank you for your service.
This anti-jam system is called Flex-Tab or Flexitab. On 12 ga models, it became standard sometime in mid-1980s. Am also unable to find exact year.
