Hastings Black Powder Barrel for Remington 870

Post by lostpine »

I have acquired a Hastings Paradox 50 caliber black powder barrel. The barrel is marked M-870 and is also marked that it can use black powder or Pyrodex. I have both a Remington 870 Express and an Express Tactical. It does not fit either of my 12-gauge Express receivers. My question is: Exactly what Remington 870 model receiver was this barrel designed to work with? The barrel is in excellent condition, and I would like to use it to extend hunting seasons in Florida. It does not appear to fit either in the receiver or the tube.

I am aware that there may be Remington 870 shotguns with differing barrel mounting (e.g. tactical), the Wingmaster model, or even the Super Magnum. Just looking for someone who might have used one of these French-made barrels before.

Sorry, I've heard of Hastings Barrels, never heard of a black powder barrel for a Remington 870.

Did a quick Google and other than suggestions to clean it after every use I didn't see anybody having problems with fitting.

It should fit. Can you upload picks of the chamber end of the barrel and a pic of it not fitting in the receiver?

Even Hastings website has no info. Got any pics of the receiver-end?

My grandson has the barrel. Give me a day or so and I will get one for you.

There is a thread here (https://dougsmessageboards.proboards.co ... ington-870) and some info here (https://www.proxibid.com/Firearms-Milit ... n/50468434) that seem to indicate that it IS meant for 870's to shoot light loads of 50-cal BP. It may have been meant for before or after the receiver size changed, which is why it won't fit your newer Express models.

I have added two photos, but I think, after more careful inspection, I can also add some additional information. On the main part of the breach end, the barrel is marked Hastings Paradox, M-870, and it lists "black powder and Pyrodex." However, my grandson found that on the underside of the barrel, it is marked M1100. Our confusion is on how a semi-automatic can take a single shot black powder barrel. The very breach end of the barrel clearly has a place for a 209 primer.

I do appreciate the help from the more experienced Remington owners. I have three, all 870 express models, two standard and one tactical. It does not fit any of those. So one more question is could it fit and fire on an 1100? I did write the surviving corporation of Hastings. They are in France. No reply from them.

Thanks

They did make them for the 1100's according to the info. The shotgun would just function like a single-shot, but probably very dirty for the gas system.

Thank you. That makes sense now. If you read Doug's Forum, there is a lot about how hard it was to keep the gun clean. Not sure what we will do with it, hold on to it for now. My grandson has access to a lot of people, someone is bound to have an 1100 to try it in. He is a game warden.

You might try another more-BP-oriented forum like 24HrCampfire or somesuch and see if there's other interest or opinions. AM sure there's more info that hgasn't been crawled by Google's bots yet.

I have a Hastings barrel that fits an 1187 (I'm guessing an 1100 too) that's a black powder barrel. My dad had used it for years during black powder season. He upgraded to a real bp rifle & asked if I wanted the barrel. The breach plug is seized on this barrel & I have it soaking in Kroil.
