Vang Comp sights question

A I have a gorgeous 1100 with an LPA ghost ring sights on it. I love it! So, I'm thinking about sending barrel to Vang Comp for their barrel treatment. I notice their ghost ring sights look just like the LPA set. What is the purpose of the rail attached to the Vang Comp sight? What else could I possibly attach to that rail? I only put a rail on my 1100 for the rear sight.

My thought is to send the whole gun in, do the barrel, Vang sights, and ceracoat the whole gun. OR drill/tap, add my own rail, mount up the sights and ceracoat myself.

I just don't get the stubby little rail. Thoughts?

It DOES occur to me that the sight is removable, then you get the rail to add a red-dot or something??

There's a wide variety of rail mounted sights that you can put on it. Probably wouldn't need to remove the rear aperture either. You could stick a red dot on there and leave the sights alone as a backup. Modern red dots are coming in smaller packages these days, you really don't need that much real-estate on your gun.


Do you have experience gunsmithing/finishing?
I don't, and for that reason I wouldn't go anywhere near my receiver with a drill. Nor do I have an oven for baking cerakote.

If your situation is different from mine, DIY will save you some $$$, but if you don't have a lot of experience you might want to try your hand on a
"not-so-gorgeous" 1100 first.

I was a machinist/tool maker for 8 years, so I know how to do it. I do wish I had a mill. Drilling is easy...tapping small holes is the scary part. I think I'll go with a rail and the LPA. Basically the same rear sight at half the price. I DO want the barrel job from Vang though. Attached is my 1100 that I tapped. It was scary but I love the LPA sights. Surefire forend and remington mag on there as well. Never fails to go BANG when I tug the loud button. There is something about an 870 though, which explains me fiddling with a couple police trades!

Fair enough! Ancient post and I thank you for your response. I've since learned a few things! So the Vang sight and rail are one piece. You can't take the sight off and slap on an optic. I think that's a bad design.

What I ended up doing was A) left my railed, LPA 1100 alone. Porting an auto-feeder is a bad idea and would probably never cycle again. I did get an 870P and sent that to Vang for the whole works. However, I had them add a side rail and solder the LPA front sight on. They did the port job, forcing cone and back boring. The shotty is amazing!

My only gripe is that it took over a year to get my 870P back. Also cost me as much as if I'd just bought a completed 870 from them.
