Opinion on Magpul Wanted

Post by gWebber »

Looking for opinions on Magpul SGA Stock & MOE M-Lok forearm.
Or possibly the Hogue mold over stock & forearm.

I’m curious about the comfort in terms of recoil and LOP VS the stock Remington Wingmaster’s wood.

I don’t know much about LOP so ... my Wingmaster measures at roughy 13.5 inches from receiver to end of tail pad.

Seems the Magpul can be as short as 12.3” and the Hogue at 12” Not a big difference from the Remington, but when I shoulder the gun it just seems like I’m reaching like it’s long. I’m 6’ 2” so not sure why it feels a little awkward.

Also the Wingmaster forearm seems too long to allow a sidesaddle or at least to one I tried.

So, I’m looking for opinions on if maybe it’s worth switching to the Magpul over the Remington for what is largely a HD gun and hopefully gun.

First, watch this:

How to Measure Length of Pull

Once you have an accurate measurement, you can decide what LOP you prefer. Your choice is between the Magpul SGA stock or having your gunsmith cut your existing wood stock to your preferred length with a Pachmayr Decelerator. Remember the length of pull will include the width of the recoil pad. Either setup would work well. You might also consider a LimbSaver recoil pad; however, my gunsmith says the Pachmayr is much easier (and therefore cheaper) to fit. It comes down to cost and whether you prefer wood or plastic.

I would recommend the Magpul Stock set. It's lop goes from 12":to 14". The SGA comes with a good comfortable buttpad, but I would order the appropriate adapter and a Remington Super Cell buttpad. Then you'd be all set. The Magpul Forend is nice for several reasons, but the best is for mounting add ons, like a weapon light. Overall the Magpul Stock set is a great choice.

EDIT: You will also be able to mount a sidesaddle with a Magpul Forend.
Due to the increased price of ammo, don't expect a warning shot...

The Remington-brand "SuperCell" recoil pad is also excellent if you can find one.

Thanks Aegusto, I’ll watch that and a couple others I found.
I know I definitely don’t want to cut the wood stock as it’s a pretty clean Wingmaster stock, so cutting it just doesn’t feel like the thing to do.

Yes, the ability to adjust the Magpul length is a big reason I’m interested in it .. even with its price tag.

Interesting, you fine the Supercell better than the Magpul pad?
I have my light tube mounted just ahead of the forearm.

Well tonight I pulled the trigger and ordered a Magpul stock & forearm ... so now my shotty will look like a million others 😂
But if I can get it dialed into a feel I like, I can live with the fact it looks like every HD build.

Will post some photos of the swap progression maybe as I might reblue the mag tube while I’m at it (it’s very worn)

Good for you! It doesn't matter that so many people have the same thing, maybe it's because it's a great Stock Set and very comfortable to shoot with. The fact that the SGA is Modular and adjustable is just a bonus. You'll like it!

Ya’ that my thinking, being able to find a fit I like is priority.
If I really feel the need to have it look different, I’ll put a smiley face sticker on it.

Now I’m on the hunt for a large high visibility sight that I can preferably attach to the rib without mods or glue. But not magnets as I think it could get knocked off to easy on a HD gun.

Much better. The Magpul MAG318 Remington 870 Original Butt-Pad Adapter (Ebay ~$15) will allow you to fit the Remington SuperCell Synthetic Stock Recoil Pad directly to the Magpul stock.

FYI, I paid $22 for a SuperCell direct from Remington before the bankruptcy. Now SuperCells are listed on Ebay in the ~$70-$90 range. At those prices, they are not worth it. I bought the SuperCell because I felt it had a slight edge over the Magpul, Pachmayr, and Limbsaver models, and it was also $10-$15 cheaper. No more! Forget the SuperCell and stick with what comes on the Magpul.
