NOTES on a 870 Facebook Group

Post by gWebber »

Ok, to start I’m a member of a 870 Group on Facebook and I wanted to share ... at first .

At first I thought, maybe invite the members to this Forum ... BUT !!

1. The newbies there are many and very, very green.
I decided the Forum would have been overwhelmed with the same basic questions time and time again. Not a good thing.

2. Some of the “more experienced” are often way to snarky to newbies and in my opinion rarely give good answers to the questions newbies ask.

To that point, while I’m not “expert” I know I’ve given better advice than many of the “experienced” gun owners.

So, as much as I’d like to share our secret little place, I felt the dozens of “wannabe” types would just not be good here.

Thoughts?

Thanks for your thoughts. Those are issues pertinent to any of these forums. Most new members come in excited, and eager. I know I was way back in my early days of forumdom. But on a forum far, far away in a galaxy long, long ago I decided after the 80th time of being told "go use the search function" to ANY question, that'd I'd never be that way. I made it over 10 years and 15,000 posts as moderator of a break-away forum from that group before I got too jaded. This is a different topic here, and I'm still glad to share. We all see the excited newbie who comes in, gets his or her answer and disappears never to contribute again. It happens. It's part of life and everybody wants free advice.

Any way, I certainly don't know it all, but try to answer any question that I can contribute too. And sometimes I'm wrong. And then tomorrow comes and ....

Very true. I’m not so concerned about newbies (heck I’m still one really) , it’s the “know it all” types with snarky non-answers or questionable answers to questions from newbies.

Example: “Just use a hammer and socket to knock out the dimples”

Ok, sure this “can” work if someone is good with tools, but I’ve seen it cost more than one user a big gunsmith bill to repair their mistakes of thinking it was easy.

Byway, I wrote a long thought out answer that ladies out a number of Pros & Cons as well as options on the subject, so at least one newbie got a real answer.

Still debating if I should mention this Forum , it’s a great resource for the newbies ... but I can do without fake experts that may come with it.

If they are accustomed to a fast pace of response this forum might not be what they're accustomed to. The place could use some action, in my opinion. Do as you please. I would think if they did an innerwebz search of "Remington 870 forum" they'd have already found this site.

I dont live here. I came here when I found an OLD 870 and wanted to know some questions about some oddities with early ones (knew my way around an 870 for quite a while already). Then I did other stuff and stopped coming here for a long time. Then I came back because I'm working on some repairs of a rare 870. I'll probably wander off again. My interests float hither and fro.

We all do, and that's okay. The thing about Vitaly's forum here is it's a single gun, single topic source. We're not an "all things Remington" site, or a competition this or that site, but just a place to share info about the 870. Do we have other threads and sub forums? Sure. But most members don't hang out here discussing everything from recipes to bunions and 2A discussions. We "can", but most of those threads die quickly.

Advertise us to the newbies? If they go to FB for their expert advice then am not sure that this is their home. If they searched for advice across the 'Net, google will point them here.

Maybe I’ll just start suggesting to a few people that there is better resources and information than found on FaceBook groups (though it’s not all good or bad).

Well, one could say that for most of the internet, but yes your point is correct 😂
