I'd say normally, with the shotgun roughly parallel to the ground.

I’ve found them to work just fine in every 870 I own or have owned.

I may have to try some myself. My purpose for shorties would be increased capacity and reduced blast for home defense, so any result less than 100% reliable function is not gonna work.
