Is it safe to shoot a shell with a bulging crimp?

Post by Okie1297 »

[img][/img]I’m new to shotguns So this is probably a stupid question. I was at Walmart yesterday and my dad picked up a couple of boxes of 20 gauge super x shells to go rabbit squirrel and pheasant hunting with. One of the boxes is 1oz of #5 I noticed when I got home that one of the shells has a bulging crimp it it die at give at all and it fells full to the top. I’m wondering if it’s safe to shoot this shell I’m new to shotguns and I dint want to rush hurtling my self or my 870.

If it bothers you at all, discard it.

I would say though if it chambers easily it should be fine. If it was me, I'd probably cut it open for unscientific inspection.

Can you post a pic?

Post a picture. Fact is the Remington 870 receiver was load tested to 55,000 psi, and most 20 ga shells run 9-11,000 psi. But no one gets to say "Oops" twice, so sometimes you're better off just disposing of the shell.

I'd shoot that. I have had similar rounds in 12ga.

I think that's more of a fail of the crimp sealing process than a problem with the load itself. Not anything to be concerned with.

^ Ditto. That's safe to shoot in my book.

Ok thank you I didn’t want to risk blowing up my gun or me and I’m new to shotguns so I didn’t know.

Come to think of it, I've reloaded some that look like that at the end, they shoot fine.
