Malfunction

Post by guinness77 »

Hello forum members.
I enjoy my 870 Wingmaster and have enjoyed shooting it for almost 30 years. Before that, my grandfather enjoyed it for many years. My 870 Wingmaster has had a worsening problem that I hope you more experienced 870 lovers might know about fixing. Here is what is happening, after loading the magazine and racking the action fully forward, I hear & see another cartridge leave the magazine and stop on the carrier/elevator. This can only be cleared by gun disassembly. It doesn't happen all the time. But it is happening more often. So I think there is part or two wearing out. Ammo length or manufacturer seems irrelevant.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Sounds like a worn or bent shell latch. They are easy to replace, just search YouTube. IS your issue like this:

Not exactly.
I'll make a video of it on Sunday (8/30) and post it.
Thanks

Well this figures.... when I get the camera up and rolling, get the lighting right, get all set... I can't duplicate the problem. Not even with 4 different kinds of snap caps, or ammo. Just my luck.

So here's another written description of the problem.
Loading the magazine goes perfect. No problems there.
Pulling the slid back... everything works. (The elevator goes down, the shell pops out onto the elevator. The next shell remain captured in the magazine.) Hunky dory so far....
As I push the slide forward I clearly see the elevator rise, the shell sliding into battery, and the elevator lowering again. Good so far...
As the slide concludes it's forward movement & stops, the next shell in the magazine pops out. It rests on the elevator. That's a problem. After firing the shell in the chamber, rearward movement of the slide is stopped because of the shell resting on the elevator.

It sounds like a few parts need to be replaced by a gunsmith. But I'd like to hear what you all have to say.

Here’s a YouTube video about common pump shotgun jams.
the “Double Feed” jam was one of them and they show how to clear it without taking the gun apart.
