Slugs through a modified choke.

Post by Okie1297 » Wed Sep 02, 2020 3:15 pm

I have a 20 gauge 870 with a modified choke. I mostly deer hunt with a ruger .243 or a Remington .270 my dads friends we deer hunt with have been given permission to hunt a dairy farm we used to hunt On. It has a lot of woods on it and they said that my 20 gauge would be a good woods gun for it. I’ve never used a shotgun for deer just small game and birds. I’m taking my rifle for deer season and I’m also taking my shotgun to go rabbit hunting to while we’re up there. My question is would be It be safe to shoot slugs through my modified choke on my 870?

Is it a fixed choke or choke tube? You can safely shoot slugs through your modified. My wife does with her 20 gauge although improved cylinder or cylinder bore is usually ideal.

Safe? Yes, but not optimal as the choke will put drag on the slug as it constricts it. A cylinder choke or full choke screw-in RemChoke isn't that expensive and would be more suited. Heck, keep them in your backpack and change as you change targets.

I wouldnt use a full choke with a slug. That's tighter yet than a modified. Cylinder or improved cylinder is what you want. Some slugs boxes even say best used with improved cylinder
