Why so tough to find new 870P model #24903??

Post by AdkMtnAir »

I just bought a new model #24903 (wood furniture) 870 Police shotgun from a shop in Pennsylvania. It was $449 and now I wish I'd bought 2 of them!! The shop had 50 of them and sold out.

I've been searching high and low here in central New York for this shotgun but they're as rare as shark teeth. It's pretty ironic since Remington Arms produces these weapons about 15 minutes from my home.

I did find two of these models for sale from police supply stores (I'm a retired l.e.o.) but the price for each was well north of $600.

Anyone out there know of shops here in NY or some other state that has this model in-stock??

Remington just doesn’t make many of them. Rumor is there is they do a run a year. There is more demand for them in the civilian market now as our police departments get more militarized. You should know departments just don’t order wood 870p’s anymore they have gone tacticool like the rest of the world.

Is there any way of getting one from Remington themselves?

I don't think Remington sells direct to dealers. Your best bet is to go to a major distributor who gets a LOT of stuff from Remington like Davidson's or Lipsey's and place and order to be filled as soon as they get some in. Or try Gunbroker since a lot of stores place their inventory online at the same time as they sell in the store.

I’m a little late but I can shed some light on this subject.
End of February, I decided to bite the bullet and get an 870 Police Magnum. I looked at Remington’s website and the 870 Police Magnum 6+1 stock #24903 with walnut furniture called to me. I searched all over but couldn’t find one anywhere. I contacted GT Distributors that is a Glock Blue Label dealer in my area and talked to customer service about the availability of a #24903. The helpful young lady said she would check for me and call me back.

An hour later, she called and said that they could take my order and they would order it directly from Remington. The only catch was that they require me to pay upfront and it would take two to three weeks for my #24903 to come in. I wasn’t thrilled about the prepayment but understood that this was a special item and not something they usually stock. So I placed my order about the same time this thread was posted.

Then the COVID crisis hit and the country shut down. Long story short, I picked up my 24903 Police Magnum last week after waiting for over 4 months. You know what, it was worth the cost and the wait. It is handsome weapon and it is beautifully made. No regrets here.

Mine was 325 back in the late 1990s or early 2000s and regardless what ppl say I am not impressed like it's some kind of of jewel to be admired I actually think my late 80s or early 90s Express is better less trouble solid as a rock

Not to derail the discussion but aside from some having rust issues the late 80’s-mid 90’s Expresses were very good shotguns especially for their price point.

"aside from having some rust issues" I can't think of much worse than the gun rusting. most malfunctions can and will be fixed on warranty. did Remington refinish the weapon for you on warranty? I've read about a LOT of these rusting. is this from poor finish or are all you guys failing to keep your weapons oiled? I suspect it's the finish. mine is older and blued so no issues but I will not buy a newer one.

Expresses are prone to red smut, no rust issues in most cases. It can be irritating but it's no big deal
