870 Police Barrel Lining Flaking Off
Took my 870 Police magnum (model 24447) to the range last week. Bought it new just over a year ago and have less than 150 rounds through it (mostly Federal/ Winchester buck and bird 2-3/4 loads) Last week i was shooting 2-3/4 rifled slugs (smoothbore barrel) and only fired 15 rounds. When I go to clean the weapon, I notice metal flaking has started around the muzzle. I tried dropping a bore snake down the barrel but the cord would not drop out the muzzle. I peek down the muzzle and see several large flakes have formed part way down the barrel that was catching the cord. Again, new shotgun w/ factory barrel, low round count, exclusively factory loads. What may have caused this to happen? How big of an issue is it? And will Remington repair it?

Picture quality isnt great. Noticed the flakes are in about the same location as the tube attachment point.

Contact Remington customer service. I bought a police model years ago and it had issues that my Express didn't. Go figure!

Had problems initially with not feeding properly when cycling quickly, wasnt short stroking it or whatever its called. What problems did you have?
Re: 870 Police Barrel Lining Flaking Off
My Police had a loose ejector spring that had to be restaked after 50 rounds, it was brand new, the Gander Mountain smith did a good job restaking it but was careless with the finish (at that time it was an authorized repair center). I kept thinking what if this shotgun had gone to a department and this failure occured in the line of duty. Other than that which is now history, it's been a lovely piece.
Back to your issue...I believe that chrome lined barrels use electroless plating, it shouldn't sheet off as if it were a car bumper (for those who can remember chrome plated bumpers.). That's why you should contact customer service and find out what's really going on.

That is weird, i haven't a clue what could be going on, but It can’t be chrome, the bore is not chrome plated.
Have you tried to scrub it with a good brass brush and a bore solvent?

I would guess that a thin-tube barrel would just be rolled steel or hammer forged, and not bored in any of the rifle-style barrel making methods. So the chances are either it's just a flaw in the metal or some leftover machining. If you know anybody or a 'smith with a borescope, that'd be the place to start. Certainly I'd contact Remington customer service. Love them we might, but Remington's quality has fallen off drastically in these recent years, it seems.

I'm pretty new to Remington's but I googled around and can't find anything about 870 barrels being plated.
