Why does the Marlin levergun have no buttplate?
I haven't put one on the 39A yet. That is the way my son got it when a family member traded it to my him for the money that they owed to him. So far I have fitted a new firing pin to it and made adjustments to it to get it in shooting condition. I bought a buttplate for it from Numrich that was supposed to fit a 39A, but it is too big. It also didn't come with the white spacer.
Maybe next month I can find a buttplate somewhere that will actually fit it...

Getting a 39A in trade is ALWAYS a win. Great shooters, buckets of fun, and a great investment too. Try this place (Bob's Gun Shop): http://www.gun-parts.com/marlin/

Thanks Scorpion8 for the nice link! I am not sure why I didn't find that company already. I am more comfortable working with steel than plastics and wood. After I finish the Marlin 57M Levermatic that I am working on now, I plan to get back on the 39A that I'm fixing up for my grandson. He will be 5 in May.
I need to do some more study on fitting buttplates. It seems to me that they make them oversized so that we can fit them to the stock that our guns have. I'll get on it pretty soon.
I apologize MrMossberg - I did not mean to hijack your thread.

Oh crap! I forgot that I need to clean my mom's M1 Carbine first, and then I will get back on the 39A.
