Opinions on buying 870 Police vs Express?

Post by Rich56 » Thu Feb 06, 2020 9:07 pm

I’m looking to buy a new 870 for all around use (informal trap, turkey, big game, home defense) with appropriate barrels. 2 870s I’m looking at are the Police and Express. Both with similar barrels and smiler shaped stocks. Police is walnut, Exp is birch. Is the Police worth about $120 more? Is the finish more durable? I know the finish on the Express can rust before your eyes.

Actually the finish on my 870 Express never saw a single ding of rust and I live in one of the wettest environments. Spent half a year shooting trap with that shotgun before moving to an o/u. I find the Express finish to be durable and since mine was a fowl/trap multipurpose gun I didn't put much worry into the wood. Mine had the laminate stock wood which I find really pleasing.

opinion? not worth the extra $120, unless you never plan on getting rid of the wood furniture.

not that many differences. (okay...the sear spring, and elevator spring are better. I replaced mine for $22 or so.)

wood furniture used (taken off of a new gun in favor of synthetic) on fleabay...probably less than 98 dollars.

again opinion.

if you want it, and, think it's worth it, than, it's worth it.

Of the two listed I’d pony up and get the police model.

But it's just pennies more to go to the Wingmaster. Lots of good used ones out there that are non-Express.

The reason I'm looking at Express and Police. The gun is going to be multi purpose to include turkey and hog hunting. I prefer having 3" chamber. a lot or the cheaper Wingmasters are 2 3/4". While hunting I have a a habit of falling and often hunt in swamps. I'd hate to abuse a nice Wingmasters finish like that. For some reason I'm having trouble keeping rust off my late cheaper Remington stuff. I had a 11-87 start rusting before the end of the day of a wet day hunting. If I do another Remington with "Express finish" I'm going to do something before use.
PS both potential shotguns were sold before I had a chance to buy but the search continues. At this point for my use the two contenders are the 870 Express Trap, Deer and Turkey models. The Montecarlo stock is a need. I know all parts are available on the net.

There is nothing that is going to walk away from a properly loaded 2-3/4” 12ga 2 or 4 legs.

Not since the dinosaurs...and, that may even be questionable.
