Rem Choke Ported Extended Hog & Predator Chokes

Post by Ricousa45 »

I have the 4 inch extended ported Hog choke and the ported Predator choke bought from Remington.
I have the 870 Magpul DM with 18.5 inch barrel I wish to use them on.
The problem is that neither choke is timed with the flat part on top but instead are about 20 degrees off the top when tight.
I have repeatedly talked to Remington abt this problem and have gotten no good info from them.
Remington customer service suggested I ship the chokes back for replacement but I am not sure that new chokes will be any different.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Post some pics of how you are trying to time it. The obvious answer is to get a choke die and thread it further just far enough to time it, or to add several thin washers if the timing needs to be retarded. Post up some pics so we can see.

Thanks Scorpion8 for your response.
Remington Customer Service suggested I return them for exchange. I just requested an RMA number and Cust. Service said they would do that.
I doubt that will help.
Looking from the choke end of the barrel, both chokes go abt 20 degrees past where they would be timed perfectly. I tried both chokes on three different barrels and both chokes go abt 20 degrees too far on all three barrels.
I thought abt using thin timing washers but Remington said that was not necessary and they did not sell timing washers.
I thought abt turning down the stop on the choke tubes but do not know if that is what is needed.
When I get the replacement chokes, I will send you some pics.
I also thought abt shortening the barrel instead of the timing washers. Whatever needs to be done would have to be done by a gunsmith. since I do not have the skill set to do this.
Thanks again.

Hopefully you have a one-off problem, and that Remington makes good on the return & replacement. Keep us informed when you get the new ones in case others have similar issues.

Thanks agn Scorpion8 for your input.
Remington sent me a UPS prepaid return label in my email today, so they are paying for the return shipping of the chokes back to them. I was pleasantly surprised by that, since I had not requested the prepaid return label.
I think you may be correct that the two ported chokes were just made incorrectly and the replacements will time perfectly. I am enclosing a note of explanation and a request to try the replacements out on a barrel before they ship them to me.
Missing out on getting a deer this year in my front yard with my new Remington 870 Magpul DM. Guess I will just continue feeding and enjoying watching them this year. CUL.

Well hopefully it's an issue with cutting the threads on the chokes and not on your 870. They may work perfectly on their shop gun, and your barrel may be mis-timed. Let's hope that is not the case. I highly doubt they try each choke for proper timing before they package and ship. Keep us informed when you get the new chokes.
