Honing barrel

So my 870 express was experiencing failure to eject issues. I decided to use a Flex hone 800 grit on the barrel where the shell sits. I did also use the recommend flex hone oil. I made several passes (less then a few minutes( forward and backwards at a moderate to high speed. Everything I’ve read on the topic indicates that doing this should leave you a mirrored finish however mine was left with circular surface scratches/scuffing. What am I missing or is this the desired finish?

800 grit is not near fine enough to give you a mirror finish on metal, especially hard chromed barrels. You need to follow that with progressively finer grits like 1200 to 1600. Is your chamber tight for new shells, or are you using reloads that perhaps have not been resized?

I’m using new shells only, this is apparently a very common issue... problem is I cant find a finer grit flex hone

Brownells list a medium and fine flex hone for a 12 ga, sounds like you need the fine.

Unfortunately the 800 grit is the fine

I have had good results with a small piece of fine scotchbrite taped to a cleaning rod.
