870 Express or 870

Post by captj68 » Sun Feb 17, 2019 1:49 am

I have a Remington 870 shotgun. On the receiver it simply has imprinted "Remington 870." I am interested in installing a scope mount and a couple other upgrades and am finding that I must be sure of the exact model. If my shotgun is an Express Model is there a way to determine this by any on gun indicators, such as serial number, or other markings?

I am looking at installing a UTG M87 Tactical scope mount. Will this work on both the 870 and 870 Express.

Saddle mounts should fit Wingmasters and Express. Is there some literature that suggests a difference?

FYI, Express guns have a textured metal surface where Wingmasters are polished and blued. And Wingmasters have that roll marked on the receiver. Unsure about Express, I dont own one.

If still in doubt you van call Remington and give them serial. They can tell you if its a Wingmaster or Express.

Just found a post on a different forum indicating that the very first 870 were not roll marked with "Wingmaster". One of mine is serial 24,XXX and it has the roll mark. So if it reads simply "870" then it could be a very early gun.

Also, the very early guns are noticeably lighter than later guns. Someday I'll strip 24,XXX and compare with mid-80's receiver to see where the difference is. I can already see the bottom of receiver forward of loading port is tapered toward the magazine. Maybe there are internal differences with the mid-80's gun. I dont have an Express, but when I heft my friend's Express it seems heavier yet.
