Mag Cap Detent Misalignment

Installing an Uncle Mike's sling swivel mag cap on a mid-80's barrel. The detent pin barely touches the detent holes in the cap. You can see a shined line near my index finger where the pin rubs outside the circumference of the hole pattern. I'll fix this with a small triangle file, cutting a shallow notch radially across the divots. If one doesnt swap barrels you really only need to do this to a few spots in front and behind the last engaged divot.

If that doesn’t work you can get this universal one from Remington and its pretty inexpensive.

Using a triangle file I grooved to approx the bottom of each divot. Then, thinking that was a rather narrow and sharp groove, I followed with the corner of a small square file.

Feathered the notch edges so it'll spin on easy but offer more resistance when loosening.

Good job making lemonade out of lemons. Make sure you blue that filed surface to prevent rust.

Got some Birchwood Casey cold blue on it. Good enough for where it is. There is way more nekkid metal on the mag tube, and Barricade rust preventive spray keeps rust at bay. So the cold blue is more than sufficient.
