Bad Parkerization? 870P issue

Post by ShotgunSam870 »

I bought this 870P new in October 2017, so I haven’t had this gun for very long. I’ve put about 500 rounds through it and noticed the end of the muzzle had look like it had lost some of the parkerziation. I wiped the gun down with CLP, but it still remains. Keep in mind, this gun has no rust on it and I take good care of it, but I don’t mind if it has some blemishes here and there, but this concerns me this early on. I have contacted Remington about it and waiting for a response. This doesn’t effect the gun in any way. Is this normal wear for Parkerized finishes?

Well, I have 3 relatively newer 870 Police shotguns. The two that I shoot slugs out of look something like in your picture.

However, it is not the Parkerized finish that is coming off ... buy lead deposits getting caught in the finish ... :-(

I realized that the barrels that come with the 870 Police models have the chamber polished but not the barrel.
I could stick my little finger into the muzzle and I could feel the tool marks inside.
And these unpolished barrels trap lead like crazy when you are shooting slugs.

When I clean those barrels there is a thick gray paste of lead coming out with each patch.
Even little chips of lead are coming out ... and some of those are getting stuck in the Parkerized finish on the outside.

I have now polished the inside of those barrels with a hand drill and fine steel wool on a copper brush ... and those barrels are not leading as bad any more.

Voila, my experience with my 870Ps ...

Wow! That’s something else. I really did think that the finish was coming off, but I do shoot slugs often out of this gun. Still, it does looks like the finish has come off all the way to the bare steel, concerning me.
Is there any way to remove the lead from finish?

Ok, I can't say what is happening there with your barrel ... maybe the finish is coming off .... All I can say is that the lead that got caught on my barrel's finish looks very similar to what you have there in the picture. Little fine metallic dots in the finish .... and around the muzzle ...

I use Ballistol to clean and lubricate all my guns. Ballistol will attack lead and copper and I keep my guns stored well oiled. So over time these spots will disappear. Ballistol attacks lead but needs quite a bit of time to do its magic .... days, weeks or even months.

(I used Ballistol on some knives that had a brass guard. I couldn't see anything wrong after one or two weeks, but when I pulled those knives out of the drawer after a couple of months of storage, there was green oxidation all over the areas with brass. Ballistol had attacked the copper in the brass ... )

One thing I know for sure is, that rubbing does not help in removal .... I tried rubbing at first ... but rubbing just lodged those lead particles deeper into the rough parkerized finish.

Here a video on gun cleaning products and their lead removal capabilities. Maybe that helps ....

At first I worried about those spots.... I am now at a point where I just accept that there is lead on the barrel ... and my Ballistol will do its job over time .... :)

Good to know that Ballistol is a good way to solve my issue, if it is what you have described. I have contacted Remington via phone, and told to email them the picture above, my serial number and my home address. Hopefully Remington can tell me what is wrong, if anything. I'll post what the outcome after this is all said and done. I have also tried rubbing it away the lead away, but no luck.
