Buying a used 870, what to look out for?

Post by gyro_cfi »

I want to purchase two used 870s. What are the common "Don't buy this one" signs I should look for?

These will be used for home defense. One may be sent to Wilson Combat for the refurbishment.

If you're wanting to build a HD shotgun, I would say look for a mid-1980s or newer 870, as it'll have the updated flex-tab action that won't jam up if your shell latches malfunction or you fumble a reload under stress. Earlier guns can be updated with the newer parts easily enough, but it's usually simpler and cheaper to look for one that's already up-to-date.
