870 RemChoke needed Cylinder or Improved Cyl.

Post by Waldo-jr »

Just got an 870 Tactical. Not sure how I feel about the extended, crenelated, tactical choke/muzzle break. I think I’d just rather have a simple Cylinder bore or Improved Cylinder RemChoke.
Anyone with a spare they are willing to part with?

Newb question, what would be the best? I also am on the fence about the tactical choke and would like to get something else. I use the gun for home defense.

A cylinder choke or improved cylinder choke would be fine for home defense. Personally, I use an improved cylinder choke for a little tighter pattern, but both will work just fine. You could use a Modified choke too however.

I would agree with the above. For HD, Cylinder or Improved Cylinder would be the chokes to look at. Little to no constriction for close-range work with buckshot, and they should also work well with most slugs. The IC may be easier to find without special-ordering something online; Cylinder tubes aren't terribly useful for hunting, and so don't often show up in local sporting goods stores. A third option if you want a fairly open constriction would be a Skeet tube. Skeet splits the difference between Cylinder and Improved Cylinder, and it'd probably be easier to find than a Cylinder tube.

Also, between cylinder and improved cylinder, which has the least restriction?

I have multiple Carlson's tubes for my 870. They've always seemed to work properly and be of good quality. I haven't done any hardcore comparative pattern-testing with them, but for buckshot at HD ranges, they seem to do the job just fine. I also like that the company is up-front about exactly what the materials and constrictions are, and don't try to blow smoke with their marketing. The fact that they offer all the standard constrictions in both flush and knurled-extended forms is another plus.

If you're shopping Carlson's tubes, the constrictions are as follows:

Cylinder - .730" (essentially no constriction, as a standard 12ga bore is nominally .729")
Skeet - .725"
Improved Cylinder - .720"

Tubes from other manufacturers can vary, but the above measurements are more-or-less typical.

Thank you for the info. I think i'll go with the improved so i have a little tighter patter for HD.

I know you had mentioned the 3 types good for HD. Would the other ones be more for hunting and what not? just for birdshot and not 00 or slugs?
