870 Barrel Problem

Post by adamjohnson »

I have a 20 gauge 870 (old standard model) and I noticed when cleaning the gun the other day that the small pin on the barrel lug that engages when the barrel retaining cap is tightened, is missing. I believe the purpose of this pin is to prevent the barrel retaining cap from backing off and loosening up. Does anyone know where I can purchase this pin, and I assume there is a spring below to maintain tension, for this gun? also, I am wondering about installation of this spring and pin - since this appears to be a blind hole in the barrel lug.

You can order the detent and spring from brownells. You will also need a detent staking tool also from brownells. Very easy to install the spring and detent.

You could also see how much a gunsmith in your area would charge to stake in a replacement detent & spring. Shouldn't take them more than a minute or two. Don't know if it would be cheaper than a $21 tool, but it would also depend on how confident you are in your gunsmithing abilities.

All written above is correct OR you can just shoot it the way it is
I have a non vent 26" barrel the same.
Been using it for years.Just check the cap every now and then if your shooting lots and no worries.

That works, I've done it, but it's kind of a pain to keep re-tightening the cap. See here for a simple way to keep a cap tight without a barrel detent.
