Remington 870 tactical for survival

Post by blackcats »

Hey, what are your thoughts on the tactical for long term shtf?

I recently picked up one of these, no complaints as far as the weapon goes. I am having a little bit of buyers remorse though for not going with the express or wingmaster.

Since I live in an urban environment it mệt what I wanted at the time, but now I am thinking in a long term shtf I am not going to be staying in the city the whole time.

Obviously I am sacrificing a bit of range with the 18.5 inch barrel, but how big of a handicap is that really in terms of hunting?

Any other general thoughts/comments appreciated.

I think the Rem. 870 is an all steel, built hell for stout, rugged, reliable firearm. It also is very, very common. There are ample parts, and perhaps some extras can be acquired and stored long term.

The disadvantages are that shotgun ammunition is heavy and relatively bulky, thus limiting the amount that can be carried. On the other hand, the shotgun's chief advantage is the sheer versatility--any small to medium to large game can be efficiently hunted depending on the load.

I'm not sure what sort of scenario you are preparing for, but there is at least the possibility that there won't be a whole lot to hunt. In that case, "gigging" and eating "the smalls" might prove an unpalatable but very necessary foraging skill to develop.

"And, on the other hand, this development of productive forces (which itself implies the actual empirical existence of men in their world-historical, instead of local, being) is an absolutely necessary practical premise because without it want is merely made general, and with destitution the struggle for necessities and all the old filthy business would necessarily be reproduced..." --Karl Marx. :(

Hmmmmm ... I am not sure if I understand what you mean .... what sights do you have on your tactical?

Here a 3 shot slug group at 50 yards (meters) with a 20" barrel and rifle sights.

And here the shotgun ... a 870 Police ...

Any 870 would be a pretty decent SHTF shotgun. They're tough, reliable, versatile, and extremely common, so if something does break, replacement parts should be relatively easy to find.

Out of the 870 model line-up, my first pick would probably be a Police model. Internal parts differences are negligible, but the Parkerized finish would probably stand up better then the oxide finishes on Expresses & Wingmasters. Also, it's a standard 4-round receiver, so it'll accept any hunting barrels for when getting food is more important than killing zombies. An Express or Wingmaster with a standard mag tube would do the same thing, and their finishes stand up well enough if they're taken care of, but I'd prefer the extra protection.

Some Tactical models have the nonstandard 6-round mag tubes, and they wouldn't be able to accept hunting barrels. You could still kill game with them, but they wouldn't be as flexible, and if you mess up your barrel, replacements won't be as easy to find.

I have multiple 870s. All 18.5 inch Police Magnum's from department trade ins. Smooth actions, parts exchange, and same manual of arms. Kept in cruiser ready condition and in easy reach location.
