Old 870 Wingmaster

Hello Everyone,

Am buying an old 870 wingmaster from a friend need a few suggestions on upgrades. Have got a hogue stock and forend for the gun.
Am confused on which extension to install it's a pretty old gun with a 30 inch barrel. Will be using it for home defense.
Should I get the barrel length reduced after I buy the extension to match it with the barrel.
Need a suggestion on a good front sight.
Need help with identifying which year was it produced.

What's the letter or letters at the beginning of the serial number? Or are there just numbers?

I would recommend getting a night sight with Tritium, I have one on my home defense shotgun and really like it.

If there're no letters at the beginning of the serial number, it's probably a 1968 or earlier gun. That means it could benefit from a flex-tab upgrade if it's going to serve as a serious defensive gun, and there may be other parts that should be updated or replaced, judging by the condition of the thing. You may want to have a gunsmith look it over for you. Ensure that it's safe to use and running reliably before you start adding stuff.

It's a 1951 I got a reply from remington. The gun works fine my friend still uses it but the forend has a lot of wobble.

30" is kinda long for HD roles, but It could be done. It might be cheaper to just purchase a barrel that to have a gunsmith cut it down. I've seen smooth bores for $80 I believe.

I personally hate to see you alter such a piece of history. Would you consider selling ( to me ) and taking money to purchase a newer gun more suited to your needs.

Thank you all for the suggestions the gun is in India. As import of arms has been stopped in India since 1984 all imported weapons are very expensive. I have paid more than 3000 dollars for this. Buying a new barrel would not be possible if available would cost a lot.

I like your suggestion to keep it as is... was thinking of getting a magazine extension and a poilsh.
