So......Cerakote or Re-Blue
So......Cerakote or Re-Blue
Got a old Wingy that's Circa 1951 that I've been slowly restoring. I wanna have the Receiver and mag tube refinished( I know refinishing destroys value) wanted your guys input. Should I have it reblued or cerakoted. The finish now is faded in patches so I need to do something. Imho. Will cerakote finish be to thick and hide all the logos and serial number? Will rebluing re- rust faster?

If you want to keep it looking original, I would say get it re-blued. Nicely-done deep, polished bluing just makes an older gun look so classy, especially when paired with some good-looking wood. You shouldn't have rust issues if you take care of it properly, and that's not tough to do.

Yes, reblue looks classy......BUT it will still rust. I have a friend who cerracoated an old, rough 870 and it looks good now. He did an OD green and it is sharp. And yes, it functions just fine. Cerracoat is good, functional finish for a 'Hunting' gun, but will never look as classy as a full, polished blue job. And you will have lots of money into the polishing for that deep finish. Another less expensive option would be to have the gun bead blasted then blued for a satin finish.

There's just something classy about an old Wingmaster with the finish wearing out. It looks like it's been used and loved, and maybe neglected, but there are hidden stories in wear. There's one at my local gun store that I frequently go and fondle. The action is super smooth, and one day I will buy a used Wingmaster, but my Express will have to do until then.
Interestingly, I found this post by typing in CeraKote because I want to Cerakote my 870 Express. Update us on what method you decided to use and post a picture if you can! Good luck
