Noob from Oklahoma!

Post by EasyCZ »

I only have one 870. I've had it for years and it's in need of some serious home defense upgrades. I'm seeing Magpul MOE in my near future. Looking forward to learning from you guys and gals.

Welcome to the forum.

What are you looking to upgrade? I can see changing the furniture if the current stuff doesn't do it for you, but it looks like you've got a pretty decent setup already.

Maybe a tactical flashlight/clamp or forend light (expensive!)?

I'd like to get a light on it for sure and some sights. Maybe a TLR-1 HL. Should probably upgrade the internals too. The Magpul stock should improve how the gun handles.

What sights do you guys like on your HD shotgun? Is there a tactical light you prefer?

To be honest, I quite like a simple front bead like what your shotgun already has. It's very fast to line up, you just shoulder the gun, and there it is. While you probably won't get clover-leaf slug groups at 100 yards with it, it's more than precise enough for defensive engagements in and around a typical home. There's very little that could break or bend with rough use, and it's extremely unlikely that that low-set bead will snag or hang up on anything. If you want improved low-light capabilities, there are a number of options for upgrading to a self-illuminating tritium bead.

I've also played with a receiver-mounted red dot (a TruGlo TG8030DBR), and I've been pretty impressed with how quickly and easily the gun lines up with that, as well. I like how there's no issue at all with keeping both eyes open, since the tube only presents the dot to the one eye closest to the stock (although I'm extremely right-eye-dominant and rarely have a problem with this anyway). And of course it's great in the dark.

However, unless I've been out shooting slugs at the range recently, my gun always seems to end up with a bare receiver and a simple front bead sight when it's pulling bedside duty. It just works.

I like Tritium sights. They were very useful on a night shotgun training because you see exactly where your shotgun is aimed before switching the flashlight on. You can read more about them: Tritium Night Sights for Shotgun

Magpul stock and forend are awesome, I have them on my shotgun. Here is review: Magpul SGA Stock and MOE Forend for Remington 870 Review

My favourite flashlight clamps are from CDM Gear, you can attach TLR-1 HL or other flashlight using them: CDM Gear Clamps Review: MOD-C, BMT with 3 slot rail, BMT Jr

I happened across your OD 870 with the Magpul stock, Hogue forend, and TLR-1HL light. Very cool. Is that a CDM clamp on the TLR? Who did the cerakote? Why Hogue over Magpul on the forend?
