The current blaze-orange factory plastic followers are perfectly good parts that I don't feel need to be replaced for the gun to do its job. They're light, durable, reliable, high-visibility, and space-efficient with factory or factory-style springs. They're also very inexpensive; even though you'll probably never really need them, you can get several spare factory followers for less than the price of one high-dollar aftermarket follower.

That said, I do really like the S&J Hardware followers. They're well-made, high-visibility, and function reliably in most magazine configurations (extensions vary, and no one follower is the best choice for all extensions, but in my experience, the S&J followers are very good in most of them). While they're not quite as light or space-efficient as the factory part, they're still not bad. The tailed Type 1 & 2 followers are also better suited to aftermarket beehive-style springs with wide center coils, such as those that come in the Wilson Combat extension kits. Another significant added feature over the factory followers is a dish, post, or hole in the end to let you feel when the magazine is empty without looking. I find that very convenient; I can pick up my gun and simply slip my thumb into the loading port to ensure that it's got an empty mag without even having to look down.

To answer your question, I don't recommend against replacing the follower, but I also don't consider it a required modification. The factory follower works perfectly fine; I take serious issue with folks who go around preaching that the factory part is bad, and that it should be replaced right out of the box with some expensive aftermarket part - especially when they're the folks who are selling those expensive aftermarket parts. However, aftermarket followers can offer some extra features, and/or work better with certain springs or extensions - especially if you start mixing & matching aftermarket parts. They're also an easy and relatively inexpensive way to satisfy an itch to tinker with and personalize a shotgun - which I completely understand. Just make sure you're not actually giving up function or reliability in the process - especially if your gun is something that you need to depend on.

I run the Vang Comp follower and love it. Very well made and Vang's customer service is fantastic.

Where does everyone get there S&J followers? Direct from them or other online shops? I've tried contacting them directly before with question but they don't seem to want to respond.

You can find S&J's official website here. They sell their products directly through their online store, and can ship from their home location in Canada to a number of different countries. If you live in the U.S. though, you should check out their state-side distributor here. They can deliver parts to U.S. addresses without having to charge international shipping. Scott, the guy who runs that operation, is also pretty good about responding to questions - at least in my experience.

Well at least you had good experience with getting a response. I have not. That's not really acceptable when paying $18 for a 1 inch piece of plastic.
But I'd still like to try out their type 3 follower in my stock +2 ext. and spring. It should work as when I load 6 of the capped and not crimped 00 buck S&B shells, I still have a little bit of push left in the spring. So if the S&J follower takes up a little more spring space than the stock follower, it just may work the same.

As I said in this thread, the avaliable space in the Remington factory extensions is limited by the follower stop near the front of the extension tube. So the tailed S&J followers actually have pretty much the same maximum capacity in those extensions as the factory cup-style followers. You may just have to trim the spring a tad to keep it from being over-compressed.

People think I'm nuts. But..stick with the factory follower!?! As long as it's not one of the whitish/grey ones (hard to see)? Especially if you run the Remington mag. extensions? I've been shooting 870's for 35+ plus years and never had a serious issue with the factory PLASTIC follower.. you can "Boo" me now Shotgunners..Lol

Synchronizor wrote:If you want to go aftermarket, I also nominate the S&J Hardware followers. I've tried a number of different followers, and I like them the best.

I will note though, that the factory plastic follower is already quite good. It's reliable, lightweight, high-visibility, and probably the most space-efficient option out there.

I wouldn't recommend the steel Vang Comp follower - especially if you're running a magazine extension. It's heavy, the same color as many shell cups, and just loves to hang up on extension joints. I consider it a down-grade from the factory part. Steel followers can also eventually damage the follower stop shoulder in the receiver if the gun is used heavily, which I'm sure is part of the reason Remington switched to plastic.
I also use S&J Hardware followers. Nothing better.
