Want to replace Follower
Hello I just got a1989 870 express magnum all original. I want to change the follower and have seen several on you tube. I like the stainless steel by vang. and the machined aluminum by GG&G. I would like to here if any other ones are better. Thanks.

Just yesterday I put the Bang follower in my police 870. Easy installation and perfect function. A huge upgrade over the factory plastic one.

Sorry, autocorrect. Not bang, but Vang. I got it from Brownells. Very easy installation. Takes about 10 minutes. Look at the 870 Forum, there's a lot of information on upgrading the 870.

Re: Want to replace Follower
If you want to go aftermarket, I also nominate the S&J Hardware followers. I've tried a number of different followers, and I like them the best.
I will note though, that the factory plastic follower is already quite good. It's reliable, lightweight, high-visibility, and probably the most space-efficient option out there.
I wouldn't recommend the steel Vang Comp follower - especially if you're running a magazine extension. It's heavy, the same color as many shell cups, and just loves to hang up on extension joints. I consider it a down-grade from the factory part. Steel followers can also eventually damage the follower stop shoulder in the receiver if the gun is used heavily, which I'm sure is part of the reason Remington switched to plastic.

Re: Want to replace Follower
My follower is black. I picked up gun from original owner and it was hardly used.I am planning on only using for turkey season and deer season. Should I just keep the black one or switch to a more visible color? I am new to this area. Any and all help would be great.

Re: Want to replace Follower
I think there's a significant safety benefit to having a follower in a high-visibility color. With a fluorescent orange or green part, the color jumps right out at you with just the quickest peek at the underside of the gun, or through the open ejection port. I also have an old Ithaca 37 with a blued metal magazine follower lying about (it's technically my brother's, but I'm holding it for him), and even though you'd think theoretically that it should be simple to tell a brass or steel shell cup apart from a black follower, it's just not instantly obvious the same way it is with a fluorescent-colored follower.

Would you not recommend swapping out a brand new factory follower for a S&J?Synchronizor wrote:If you want to go aftermarket, I also nominate the S&J Hardware followers. I've tried a number of different followers, and I like them the best.
